My shop is located 20 minutes from The Villages, which is a large retirement community. Over the years I have seen a lot of Northerners bring their furnishings down and decide it doesn’t fit their Florida decor.
In the following example my client had an oak bedroom set they liked for the size and function but were tired of the color. After discussing the options they decided to go ahead and have me stain the tops and paint the bodies.
They also did not like the hardware on the set. They spoke of replacing it but in the past, I have had great success painting the hardware. I suggested we do this with their set as it can get expensive to replace hardware. They did have damage on one knob, which I was able to fix with some epoxy. Now they have a functional and pretty set of knobs and pulls.
I have used the Java Gel Stain (made by General Finishes) before for the tops of furniture. The color works very well with lightly colored furniture bodies.
We then decided that Alabaster (made by Sherwin Williams) would compliment the tops very nicely. As you can see, we painted the hardware the same color. If you have pretty hardware and you want it to stand out, you could distress it to bring the gold or silver back through the paint.
I have done hundreds of sets like this and every time I LOVE the end result. I believe these are classic and will never go out of style.
