Do you have black painted furniture in your home? Have you ever seen before and after examples of black painted furniture? If not, let me show you one.
Whenever I paint a piece black it always reminds me of seeing your man in a tuxedo: it is that elegant. I have taken many not-so-special pieces of furniture and painted them black, and WOW, they look fantastic. You would never think a boring piece of furniture could catch your eye so well, but that’s what black paint can do. It can add sophistication and elegance. It’s a classic look that will never go out of style.
Now don’t get me wrong, color is great too and the black should not be overwhelming. But it’s important, in my view, that every room has some bit of black in it. It has a grounding effect that gives the eye a place to rest. When you have too many light and airy colors, with nothing to ground them, they can almost appear to be floating: it is confusing to the eye.
I can’t remember how many pieces I’ve done in black paint over the years, but I can tell you I have never been disappointed in that choice. It’s often a big surprise for my customers when I recommend it and they sometimes have trouble visualizing the look. But most have been pleasantly surprised at the outcome. Many of them didn’t recognize their own furniture when it was finished!
The dresser in the top photo (yes, the one I’m sitting on…lol) needed to match the rest of my client’s bedroom set. As you can see from the before photo, it stuck out like a sore thumb. Now that the dresser is the same color, it blends in even though the style is different from the rest of the set. As you can see, you can mix similar but different styles if you keep the finish the same or similar.
This is one of my favorite looks. Nothing in my home is “matchy-matchy”: each piece is different. But I was able to tie them together with their finishes. (That being said, nothing is wrong with “matchy-matchy.” I just prefer a more eclectic decor.)
So whatever your style or color choices, remember to add a splash of black in there.
