One time when I was shopping at a thrift store I came across a beautiful antique Victrola cabinet that had been gutted. I knew this piece of furniture was high quality and I had a vision for repurposing it. So I loaded it in my car and dragged it back to the shop. I decided to make it into a wine/liquor cabinet. The size was perfect for its new life.
I had it on the sales floor at my shop when a client walked in and saw it. The size and style did not fit her home but it gave her the concept. She needed something in which to hold all the wine she and her husband purchased while on a trip to the Vineyards in CA.
She stopped at a thrift store and found an old French Provincial TV cabinet. This style would fit perfectly with her French Provincial dining table and buffet, which I previously painted for her.
She showed up at my shop with her new find and wanted me to create a wine cabinet. She also brought her parent’s laundry rack….yes that’s right….their laundry drying rack!
I knew just the carpenter to help in this transformation: my dad. So he took on the challenge and recreated the TV cabinet so it would hold 20 bottles of wine. He used plywood and the customer’s parent’s laundry drying rack…lol.
He built a plywood shell and added the round drying rack pieces into the plywood at just the right angle so the bottles would tip forward to keep the wine corks moist. Here’s a picture of the drying rack rods and plywood. This whole piece then slid right into the cabinet from the back.
My client also requested the iron decor she purchased to be used in the doors. The two original doors were cut in the center, so the iron pieces could be installed. Then they were sandwiched with two rods from the drying rack.
The right side did not have a door so there was no access to that side. A door was built so that the whole TV cabinet could be used for wine storage.
After it was all put together I painted the inside black, the outside grey and I stained the top to match her dining table.
It was a huge success, and she was very happy. She has it full of her wine. She keeps her “very special” bottles stored in the right side compartment.
Not only did she recycle a beautiful piece of furniture but she was also able to incorporate her parent’s laundry drying rack, which gives it sentimental value.
She has a one-of-a-kind, custom made item that will be a conversation piece every time she entertains.
The other one I did is available for sale on my website. Just click here to see it. Shipping is also available. Just respond with your zipcode and I will get the cost for shipping it to you.
These are one-of-a-kind items and they would look great in any home.
